Bioversal Eco-foam QF used in tunnel protection systems.

After the recent disasters in 2001 and 2002 in Austria, Switzerland and France, where fire started as a consequence of an accident, the consciousness of drastic changes in the existing systems became clear.

The Italian Bioversal importer "Bio-Thermit s.r.l." developed together with APT Anticendio s.r.l. a unique patented system to control tunnel fires. Following parameters where set for improvement:

1 saving of the victims; 2 create save working conditions for the emergency services; 3 fire fighting circumstances better and easier to be controlled

Simply explained, the system divides the tunnel in a number of sectors of 62m each with water-walls. In case of a fire, a water shield containing Bioversal will mark out the sector in which the fire occurs (see image).


The water walls with Bioversal QF reduce the temperature (less then 60°C) to a value that is not dangerous for people. Secondly the positive effect of the Bioversal water combination is that these water-walls keep the smoke, dangerous gas and heat between the water-walls in the sector, and stop expanding into the adjacent non-burning area's. The smoke that develops gets clear so people can see through and go to the exits.
Taking in consideration that the biological eco-foam used is dermatological tested, non-toxic, water hazard classification 1, pH neutral and harmless for the environment we have a human friendly and safe solution. An additional advantage is that Bioversal eco-foam reduces the skid resistance caused by oil slicks.

The Italian railways where the first to move into this new system and secured the 12 km length Orte tunnel. Many projects are in the pipe-line and following, as the system is suitable for new and existing tunnels.
